The son of William and Abigale (d. 199) Hickman. He was schooled at Westminster School and then went to Christ Church, Oxford. He graduated BA (1671) MA (1674), BD (1684) and DD (1685). He then received several high status appointments, working as chaplain to Charles II's illegitimate son; Baron Chandos in 1680; and to the lord lieutenant of Ireland in 1680. He was rector of Farnham Royal from 1688 - 1703, and from July 1692 lecturer at St James's Church, Westminster. He also served as chaplain-in-ordinary to William and Mary, and later Anne. He was then appointed bishop of Derry in 1703 and became a spokesman for the high-church movement in Ireland. In 1703 he also married Anne, the daughter of Sir Roger Burgoyne of Aynhoe, Northamptonshire and they had one daughter, Anne. He published several single and collections of sermons during his time in Ireland. He died on 28 November 1713 in Fulham.
