The exact birth date of Samuel Brunning is unknown. He matriculated pensioner from St Catharine's College, Cambridge in Easter 1652, graduating B.A. in 1655/6 and proceeding M.A. in 1659. Brunning became rector of Semer, Suffolk in 1663, a post which he held until c. 1677. On 9 December 1664, King Charles II signed a letter empowering Brunning to hold his Fellowship at St Catharine's, together with the rectory of Semer in Suffolk, notwithstanding the College statutes. Brunning held the Fellowship until 1675. He was also awarded the degree of B.D. in 1667.
