Ejected minister and writer of religious controversy. Born November 1587 or 1588 at South Luffenham, Rutland to Robert Cawdrey, the rector there. His father was was ejected from that post shortly thereafter for opposition to the Book of Common Prayer. He was admitted to Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge in 1606; BA, 1610; MA from Peterhouse, 1613. Ordained priest in 1614, he was first made rector of Little Ilford, Essex in 1617, preacher at St Lawrence, 1623-1625, before leaving both posts to become rector of Great Billing, Northamptonshire in 1625, a post he held until his ejection for nonconformity in 1662. During the Interregnum, he was active in London: member of the Westminster Assembly, 1643; minister of St Martin-in-the-Fields and member London presbyterian classis. Retired to Wellingborough, Northants after his ejection. where he died in October 1664 (will executed 15 October). A staunch Presbyterian, he wrote against congregationalism and in defence of predestination.
