The exact birth date of James Nalton is unknown. He matriculated at Trinity College, Cambridge in 1616, graduating B.A. in 1620 and proceeding M.A. in 1623. He was instituted to the rectory of Rugby, Warwickshire on 22 December 1632. On 13 April 1643, Nalton became clerk at St Leonard's, Foster Lane, London. In 1651, he fled to the Netherlands, becoming joint pastor of the English church with Thomas Cawton in Rotterdam. Nalton returned to St Leonard's in 1652, but he was ejected on 17 August 1662. Nalton died in December 1662, and was buried on 1 January 1663. He had been known in his lifetime as 'the Weeping Prophet'.
