Born in Halifax, England in 1624. He came with his father Matthew to New England in 1635. He graduated from Harvard in 1647. He was minister of Cambridge from 21 August 1650 until his death. He had a controversy regarding pedobaptism which resulted in him being removed from the college. He was a member of the synod at Boston in 1662. He was known for being a fervent, energetic preacher. He published a volume of his sermons in 1677. He died on 9 July 1668.
