He was educated at Magdalen Hall, graduating BA in 1623 and MA in 1627 and was made a fellow of Catharine Hall. He was ordained in 1627 and was a lecturer at Colchester from 1635-7. He went to New England in 1639 and was ordained as an assistant pastor to Rev George Philips on 9 December 1640. He was one of a party of three missionaries sent to Virginia in 1643 and then resumed his pastorate in Watertown from 1643-51. He then returned to England in 1651, and was a lecturer in Bristol Cathedral from 1653-8. He was silenced by the Act of Uniformity. He was a Presbyterian minister in London in 1672. He was offered the presidency of Harvard College but declined it. In New England, he married Elizabeth Willis.
