The exact birth date of Charles Gibbes is unknown. He was baptised at Honington, Warwickshire on 4 November 1604. Gibbes matriculated at Magdalen College, Oxford on 26 June 1621 at the age of sixteen, graduating B.A. on 20 February 1623 and proceeding M.A. on 25 June 1628. He had been elected Fellow of Merton College in 1624. From 1637 until 1646, Gibbes was rector of Gamlingay, Cambridgeshire. During late 1640s and 1650s, he withdrew to Canterbury and made his living by teaching in a private school. In the Restoration, he was instituted to the rectory of Stanford Rivers, Essex. He also became canon of Westminster in 1662, and was awarded the degree of D.D. in the same year. Gibbes died on 16 September 1681.
