Catherine Evans
Joshua Moody was born in Ipswich, Suffolk, the son of William Moody and Sarah Pierce. He is the brother of Samuel Moody (GEMMS Person ID: 2987) and Caleb Moody. The family settled in Newbury, New England in 1634. He began to preach c. 1648 and graduated B.A. from Harvard in 1653. He was very concerned with the purity of the church, which led to him being imprisoned by Governor Cranfield. He was released on the condition that he would not preach in New Hampshire. On 23 May 1684, he became assistant minister to the First Church, Boston. During the witchcraft trials, he opposed violent measures towards the accused and aided Philip English and his wife in their escape from prison. This led to him being dismissed from his church, and he would live the rest of his life in Portsmouth. He married Martha Collins (b. 6 September 1639) c. 1660, and had issue: Abigail, Sarah, Martha, Samuel and Hannah. He married again, after 1674, to Anne (Wall) Jacobs, widow of Samuel Jacob. He died at Boston in 1697, aged sixty-five.
