Juxon, William (1582-03-25 - 1663-06-04)

The exact birth date of William Juxon (bap. 18 October 1582) is unknown. He entered Merchant Taylors' School, London on 30 June 1595. On 11 June 1598, Juxon was elected to St John's College, Oxford on a Sir Thomas White scholarship, matriculating on 7 May 1602 at the age of nineteen. He was awarded the degree of B.C.L. on 5 July 1603. In September 1606 and September 1607, he was ordained deacon and priest, respectively. In 1609, he became vicar of St Giles, Oxford. He resigned this living upon his institution to the rectory of Somerton, Oxfordshire in January 1616. He was subsequently presented to the rectory of East Marden, Sussex in 1622, and was awarded the degree of D.C.L. in the same year. He succeeded William Laud as president of St John's College, Oxford on 10 December 1621. In 1633, he became bishop of London, again succeeding Laud. He was deprived of his bishopric by Oliver Cromwell; however, in the Restoration, he was sworn in as Archbishop of Canterbury. Juxon died, unmarried, on 4 June 1663 and was buried at St John's College Chapel. Juxon is perhaps best remembered for having attended Charles I on the scaffold.
