Conduitt, John (1688-03-08 - 1737-05-23)

The exact birth date of John Conduitt is unknown. He was baptised on 8 March 1688 in London. After attending Westminster School, he was admitted pensioner at Trinity College, Cambridge on 7 June 1705 at the age of eighteen. On 26 August 1717, Conduitt married Catherine Barton, the niece of Sir Isaac Newton. He served as M.P. for Whitchurch, Hampshire in 1721-22 and 1728, and subsequently for Southampton from 1734 until 1737. In 1727, he succeeded Isaac Newton as Master of the Mint. His publications included Observations on the Present State of our Gold and Silver Coins, which was widely praised. Conduitt died on 23 May 1737 and was buried by the side of Newton at Westminster Abbey.
