William Cecil was born on 18 September 1520. He entered St John's College, Cambridge in 1535, but left to be admitted at Gray's Inn on 6 May 1541. On 11 October 1551, he was knighted. He became Secretary of State shortly after the coronation of Elizabeth I. Sir William Cecil became Chancellor of the University of Cambridge in 1559. Cecil was created M.A. in 1564, and M.A. (University of Oxford) two years later. He was created Baron Burgley on 25 February 1571. From 1572 until his death on 4 August 1598, Lord Burghley served as Lord High Treasurer. He was buried at St Martin's Church, Stamford Baron, Lincolnshire.
