Vermigli, Pietro Martire (1500-09-08 - 1562-11-12)

Pietro Martire [Peter Martyr] Vermigli was born in Florence, Italy, on 8 September 1500, the son of a shoemaker. He studied in Padua after having entered the monastery of San Bartolomeo, Fiesole. Vermigli was ordained on 23 September 1525. Owing to his commitment to Reformed doctrine, he fled Italy for Zurich in August 1542. Martin Bucer called him to Strasbourg, where he became professor of theology. In March 1548, Archbishop Thomas Cranmer invited Vermigli to England to take up the post of Regius Professor of Divinity at the University of Oxford. During the reign of Mary I, he went into exile. Vermigli died in Zurich on 12 November 1562, and was buried at the Grossmünster. See Torrance Kirby, Emidio Campi and Frank A.
