The exact birth date of Edmund Guest is unknown. Born at Northallerton, Yorkshire, in 1514, Guest was educated at York Grammar School, Eton College and King's College, Cambridge. He held a fellowship from 1539, graduating B.A. in 1541 and proceeding M.A. in 1544. In 1548, he published A Treatise againste the preuee Masse, &c. (London, 1548). He was awarded the degree of B.D. in 1551. From 7 November 1559 until 1564, he served as archdeacon of Canterbury. He also held the living of Cliffe, Kent. He was consecrated bishop of Rochester on 24 March 1560, and was subsequently elected to the see of Salisbury in 1571. Guest served as bishop of Salisbury until his death on 28 February 1577.
