James Allen was born in 1632. He matriculated at Magdalen Hall, Oxford on 16 March 1649/50. He served as chaplain of New College, Oxford from 1649, and was a Fellow there from 1650. Allen graduated B.A. on 28 April 1652, proceeding M.A. on 30 May 1654. After being ejected in 1662, he moved to New England. His publications included New-Englands choicest Blessing, &c. (Boston, 1679), Serious Advice to delivered Ones from Sickness, &c. (Boston, 1679) and Neglect of Supporting and Maintaining the Pure Worship of God, &c. (Boston, 1687). Allen served as Fellow of Harvard College from 1700. He died in Boston at the age of seventy-eight.
