The exact date of birth of Edward Chetwynd is unknown. Born in Staffordshire, he matriculated at Exeter College, Oxford, in 1592, graduating B.A. in 1596 and proceeding M.A. on 7 November 1598. Chetwynd was awarded the degree of B.D., and was also licensed to preach, on 15 December 1606. He became lecturer of Abingdon, Berkshire in the same year, serving as chaplain to Queen Anne seven years later. Chetwynd proceeded D.D. on 15 July 1616, and shortly after became dean of Bristol. During the 1610s, he published three works, including a memorial sermon for Henry Frederick, Prince of Wales. In the 1620s, he held the livings of Banwell (Somerset) and Berkeley (Gloucestershire). Edward Chetwynd died on 13 May 1639, and was buried in the choir of Bristol Cathedral.
