Frederick Augustus was born at Buckingham House on 27 January 1773, the sixth son of King George III and Queen Charlotte. He entered the University of Göttingen in 1786. On 4 April 1793, he married Lady Augusta Murray (d. 1830). The marriage ceremony was secret and there were no witnesses present; subsequently, the marriage was declared void by the king in August 1794. In 1801, Prince Augustus was created duke of Sussex, earl of Inverness and Baron Arklow. He was elected president of the Society of Arts in 1816. From 1830 until 1838, he served as president of the Royal Society. The duke died on 21 April 1843 at Kensington Palace. Upon his request, he was not buried with the royal family at Windsor, but at Kensal Green Cemetery on 4 May 1843.
