The exact date of birth of Edward Bentall is unknown. Originally from Essex, he matriculated sizar from Queens' College, Cambridge (Michaelmas Term, 1624). Bentall graduated B.A. in 1627/8 and proceeded M.A. in 1631. He was ordained deacon at Peterborough on 1 August 1630. In 1637, he became curate of Black Notley, Essex. From 1641 until 1649, he served as rector of Stapleford Abbotts, Essex. He was instituted to the rectory of Chipping Ongar, Essex in 1658. In 1660, he published a sermon entitled Basileus Basileon, which had been preached in Oxford. By this time, he was minister of Baughurst, Hampshire.
