The exact date of birth of Daniel Whitby is unknown. Born c. 1609-10, Whitby was the son of Thomas Whitby of Podding, Bedfordshire. On 23 January 1628/9, he matriculated at Brasenose College, Oxford, aged nineteen. Daniel Whitby graduated B.A. on 10 December 1631 and proceeded M.A. on 28 June 1634. From 1637, he was instituted to the rectory of Theydon Mount, Essex; however, he was ejected during the English Civil Wars. During the Interregnum, he served as rector of Arrow, Warwickshire. In 1660, he became canon of Chichester. Finally, he was rector of Preston Bissett, Buckinghamshire from 1663 until 1674. His date of death is unknown. He was the uncle of the clergyman Daniel Whitby (1637/8-1726). The Vindication Of a true Protestant, and faithfull Servant to his Church, &c. (Oxford, 1644) included a sermon which he preached at Romford, Essex.
