The exact date of birth of Thomas Ashenden is unknown. Originally from Canterbury, he was educated at Wye before being admitted sizar, aged sixteen, at St John’s College, Cambridge, on 5 June 1665. He graduated B.A. in 1668/9, was elected Fellow in 1670, and proceeded M.A. in 1672. On 20 June 1675, he was ordained priest at Ely; shortly after, he was instituted to the rectory of Dingley, Northamptonshire. He held this post until 1683. He was prebend of Armargh from 1686 until his death in 1723.
