The exact date of birth of John Gibbs is unknown. Born in Norfolk, he was admitted pensioner at Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, in 1660. Gibbs graduated B.A. in 1663/4 and proceeded M.A. in 1667 (incorp. Oxford, 1669). He was instituted to the rectory of Gissing, Norfolk in 1668, holding this post until he was ejected as a nonjuror in 1690. He had also served as rector of Banham, Norfolk in 1671. Before his ejection, he had considered converting to Catholicism before returning to the Church of England; he delivered a recantation sermon on this subject at Gissing on 2 December 1688. After his ejection, he remained in lodgings at Gissing. Gibbs was buried at Frenze, Norfolk.
