The exact date of birth of Roger Fenton is unknown. Born in Lancashire in 1565, he matriculated sizar from Pembroke College, Cambridge in Michaelmas 1585, graduating B.A. in 1589. He became a fellow in 1590 and subsequently proceeded M.A. in 1592. He served as preacher at Gray's Inn in 1598, and was awarded the degree of B.D. in 1602. Fenton was instituted to the rectory of St Stephen Walbrook on 18 August 1601, and held this living for fifteen years. On 29 September 1603, he became rector of St Benet Sherehog; three years later, he resigned this appointment to hold the living of Chigwell, Essex. Finally, Fenton succeeded his friend Lancelot Andrewes in the prebend of St Paul's in 1609, and was awarded the degree of D.D. in 1613. Roger Fenton died on 16 January 1616, and was buried under the communion table at St Stephen Walbrook.
