Challoner, Luke (1550-01-01 - 1613-04-27)

Luke Challoner, likely son of Francis Challoner, merchant, and nephew of John Challoner, secretary to the Irish privy council and mayor of Dublin, was born in 1550 to a prosperous family. He matriculated from Trinity College, Cambridge in 1582 and was made Scholar in 1584; he graduated B.A. in 1585/6 and proceeded M.A. in 1589. He held the prebend of Mulhuddart at St Patrick's cathedral, Dublin from 1597 to 1613. Challoner was one of the founding fellows of Trinity College Dublin, and became Vice-Chancellor of Dublin University in 1612. He was awarded a D.D. from TCD in 1601 and was responsible alongside James Ussher for the considerable expansion of the college's library. He was predeceased by his first wife, Rose Ball (1604), who was the mother of his only child Phoebe; upon Rose's death, he married Elizabeth Percevall. He became the father-in-law to James Ussher, archbishop of Armagh, when Ussher married Challoner's daughter. Challoner died 27 April 1613 and was buried in the TCD chapel.
