Mossom, Robert (1617-01-12 - 1679-12-21)

Robert Mossom, son of Raphe Mossome, was baptised at the church of St Michael-on-the-Mount, Lincoln, on 12 January 1617. He was admitted sizar at Magdalene College, Cambridge on 2 June 1631, but two months later migrated to Peterhouse. Mossom graduated B.A. in 1635, proceeding M.A. three years later. He served as army chaplain during the English Civil Wars, and was sequestered from a living at Teddington, Middlesex, on 25 July 1650. Following this, he preached at St Peter, Paul's Wharf, using the banned Book of Common Prayer. In the Restoration, he was awarded the degree of D.D. at Cambridge, and was appointed dean of Christ Church, Dublin. On 27 December 1660, he was also elected precentor of St Patrick's, Dublin. Finally, in 1666, he was consecrated bishop of Derry. Mossom died at Londonderry on 21 December 1679, and was buried at St Patrick's Cathedral on 1 January 1680.
