He was born in Grantham, the son of William Still. He matriculated from Christ's College in November 1559, and gained his BA 1561/2, B.D. 1570 and DD 1575, and was a felllow from 1562 - 1570. He was appointed as the Lady Margaret preacher and professor in 1570, and became Master of St John's College in 1574 and then subsequently Master of Trinity College from 1577 - 1592, holding the Vice Chancellor position in 1575/6 and again in 1592. He was the Chaplain to Archbishop Parker, and rector of Hadleigh in Suffolk from 1571 - 1592, and Dean of Bocking in 1572, Vicar of East Markham in 1573. He rose up the church hierarchy, becoming Canon of Westminster in 1573 and Archdeacon of Subury in 1577, roles he gave up on becoming Bishop of Bath and Wells. He married twice, 1st to Anne Alabaster, daughter of Thomas Alabaster of Hadleigh and 2nd to Jane Horner, daughter of Sir John Horner of Cloford, Somerset. He had two sons with his first wife, John ( STL604J) and Nathaniel, his heir (STL595N). He was buried in Wells Cathedral on 4th April 1608. He is believed to have been the author of Gammer Gurton's Needle, a comedy played at Christ's College.
