The exact date of birth of David Jones is not known. He was born in Caerfallwch, Flintshire, the son of Matthew Jones. He began his studies at Westminster School in 1678, subsequently matriculating at Christ Church, Oxford, aged eighteen, in December 1681. He was awarded the degree of B.A. four years later, eventually proceeding M.A. in 1693. Jones became vicar of Great Budworth, Cheshire, in 1694, a post he held until 1696. In 1699, he acquired the living of Marcham (now in Oxfordshire). Throughout his life, he was involved in various disputes with parishioners and higher authorities, frequently being compared to the notorious Henry Sacheverell. Jones was buried at Marcham on 7 August 1724.
