The exact date of birth of Thomas Jackson is not known. He was baptised at Witton-le-Wear, County Durham, on 21 December 1578. He matriculated, aged seventeen, at Queen's College, Oxford on 25 June 1596. He graduated B.A. from Corpus Christ College, Oxford on 23 July 1599 and proceeded M.A. on 9 July 1603. In 1605, he was ordained deacon and priest. On 27 November 1623, he became vicar of St Nicholas, Newcastle; two years later, he was instituted to the rectory of Winston, County Durham. King Charles I presented him to the vicarage of Witney, Oxfordshire, on 18 July 1632; less than three years later, he became a canon of Winchester, again owing to the king's influence. Jackson died on 21 September 1640.
