Contents Note

Notes of sermons, recorded by Anne Harcourt, Lady Harcourt (formerly Anne Waller, née Paget) (d. 1661). Preachers include William Bridge, Samuel Bamford, and Edmund Calamy. Preaching locations include St Aldermanbury, London, in addition to Delft and Rotterdam. Harcourt writes in a cursive round hand; only rarely are there any marginal notes (e.g. scriptural references). Ff. 52v-53v, 99r-v, and ff. 105v-122r comprise miscellaneous observations, rough notes, and devotional writings, not written in Harcourt's hand. A brief contents list of the sermons which Harcourt had noted appears on f. 112r.

Acquisition

The Harleian Library was founded by Robert Harley, First Earl of Oxford (1661–1724). According to Cyril Ernest Wright, Robert Harley ‘was primarily interested in English historical and political material and in volumes of sermons and theological controversy, sharing in the latter the taste of his Harley ancestors’. See Cyril Ernest Wright, Fontes Harleiani (London, 1972), p. xxxiv.
