Contents Note

This volume contains Evelyn's copies of religious material by Margaret Blagge, wife of Sidney Godolphin. These include sermon notes, as well as hymns and poetry. Evelyn has written, "Devotions of Mrs Blaggs which I copied out at the Request of my Lady Sylvius & from whom I borrowed them afterwards & intend to Restore". An additional note, added after 1698, reads "and now by her [Lady Sylvius's] Permission I would have them presented to my Lady Harriet Godolphin", the latter being Blagge's daughter.

Material Features

Quarto notebook in marbled modern binding, 195 x 150mm, iii + 22 leaves. Evelyn has paginated Blagge's writings, pp. 81-119. These pages are from a longer, unidentified work. The Bible texts are missing from many of the sermon notes.

Provenance

From the Evelyn Papers. Blagge's husband granted Evelyn access to Blagge's papers after her death. This manuscript formerly had the shelf mark Evelyn MS 122.

Source of Data

Anne James; British Library manuscript catalogue

Other Note

Precise date unknown. The date is after 1678, when Blagge died, and must be before Evelyn's death in 1706. Blagge's notes are assumed to be from the period when she was married to Godolphin, 1675-1678.
