Eight sermons preached during the war with France, along with medical and domestic recipes and notes. The sermons are found on ff.1-113, and include two for victory in the war against France (ff.2-13, 99-113) and two for funerals. The sermons reference King William and Queen Mary (ff.12v, 113r), recent defeats suffered at the hands of the French (ff.4, 111-113), and fear of the loss of liberty and religion allayed by a deliverer raised up by God (f.3v), likely referring to the Battle of the Boyne in 1690. The recipes and notes that comprise the latter half of the manuscript (ff.124-140) are in a different hand than the sermons, and include references to Samuel Harris, rector of Walgrave, Northants. from 1704-08 (f.124, 129r), Edward Hutchinson, Esq. of Rotterdam, Holland (f.129r), and Lady Napier and Archibald Napier of Luton Hoo, Beds.
140 folios. Two hands.
Inscription on the front end-paper, "ex-libris domini Hassell" is in the same hand as the sermons.
Acquired and catalogued post-1991.
