Contents Note

The second of nine volumes that contain sermons that were preached primarily at Sacomb, Hertfordshire 1692-1695; Matching, Essex 1696-1698; Hadley, Middlesex and East and High Barnet, Hertfordshire 1705-1715 (1716?). The preacher often notes the chief parishioners present: f. 98v lists prominent individuals present at his sermons in Nov. 1709 and June 1714 (sermons at "Hadley & Barnetts" were attended by "Mr Taylor," "Bishop," "& abundance of Gentry"); on sermons given in June (year unknown) at "Hadley & Barnetts," f. 140r-v lists prominent attendees and their families; another list of attendees is given on f. 158v with a commendation of a sermon (dated 1712, 1713).

Material Features

Overall, this is a well preserved manuscript. Most sermons are clear. Some of the parchment bindings are made from parts of legal deeds. ii+250 leaves.

Source of Data

Lucy Busfield; Bodleian Library Summary Catalogue, vol. 3; CCEd (Person IDs: 166807 & 166808)

Other Note

These sermons very likely are by Robert Taylor, who was the rector of East Barnet, Hertfordshire (1681-1719) and the curate of Monken Hadley, Middlesex (ca. 1697). Another volume in this collection (MS. Rawl. E. 86) gives "Taylor" as the preacher's name, and these places and dates fit the preaching data for these sermons.
