Contents Note

Commonplace book containing sermon notes and some complete sermons (inner flyleaf + ff. 1r-145v) by William Sancroft the elder (1583-1637), Master of Emmanuel College and uncle of Archbishop Sancroft, in his own handwriting. These are mostly Sancroft's own sermons, but they also include notes on sermon by Hall (f. 26r) and Crashaw (ff. 39v-40r), and a sermon by Roger Goad of King's College, Cambridge (ff. 160r-162v). The manuscript also contains extracts from other theological writers and English and Latin arguments on theological topics. At the end is an index with additions by Sancroft the younger. Along with MSS. Rawl. D. 1330 and 1332, this is one of three commonplace books by Sancroft, written mostly in English with some Latin. He is not identified as the author in any of these volumes, but he has been identified by the handwriting.
