Contents Note

These are notes taken by Joseph Keble on sermons preached at Gray's Inn Chapel, London, all in 1679 (Old Style) by various preachers. Many of the sermons were preached by "Mr Clegat" (William Clagett, preacher at Gray's Inn) and "Clegat Jun[ior]" (presumably William's brother, Nicholas, who had the same name as their father, also a preacher). With a few exceptions, the sermon notes alternate between dated and undated, the dates falling on consecutive Sundays. Gray's Inn typically had two sermons per Sunday, so presumably each undated sermon was preached on the same day as the one that precedes it. The manuscript begins with indexes of authors (iii-v) and Bible texts (vi-xix).

Material Features

Paper, xx + 842 pages, 8 3/8 x 6 5/8 inches. P. 582 is treble. Keble's pagination mistakenly jumps from p. 656 to p. 667; starting on that page, the library has added its own pagination continuing the original sequence. The library's pagination is referred to here for entries between p. 657 and the end of the manuscript. Sermons on the same Bible text are cross-referenced in the margin. Keble's sprawling hand is often difficult to decipher, although it is consistent throughout. Many pages have a large tear close to the margin.

Provenance

The volume was number 13 of a long series of Gray's Inn Chapel notes ranging in date from 1669 to 1707.
