Contents Note

These are notes taken by Joseph Keble on sermons preached at Gray's Inn, London, in a two-year span (1706-1707, Old Style) by various preachers. Many of the sermons were preached by Robert Moss (1666-1729), preacher at Gray's Inn, and by "Dr Lindford". The latter is presumably Thomas Lynford (1650-1724), rector of St Edmund the King, London, who appears to be the only preacher named Lynford (or any variation on that name) who was D.D. in 1706-1707. With a few exceptions, the sermon notes alternate between dated and undated, the dates falling on consecutive Sundays. Gray's Inn typically had two sermons per Sunday, so presumably each undated sermon was preached on the same day as the one that precedes it. The manuscript begins with indexes of authors (iii, v) subjects (iv), and Bible texts (vi-xii).

Material Features

Paper, xx + 926 pages, 8 1/2 x 6 3/4 inches. Keble's sprawling hand is often difficult to decipher, although it is consistent throughout. Sermons on the same Bible text are cross-referenced in the margin. The pagination jumps from 639 to 670.

Provenance

The volume was number 32 of a long series of Gray's Inn Chapel notes ranging in date from 1669-1707.
