Contents Note

One of four volumes (MSS. Rawl. E. 109-112) of sermons by John Beaumont, mostly preached at Deptford, Kent, c. 1697-1730. It seems to be Beaumont's own book. The sermons are indexed by contents, but they are based on exegesis of particular scriptural passages. The sermons form a numbered series from 1 to 38, except for the sermon on Exodus 34:6-7 (ff. 121r-126v) which is not part of the series and has been inserted between sermons 15 and 16. Preaching occasions noted at the end of each sermon, usually beginning with a number indicating how many times the sermon was preached (often twice in a single day). In many cases, an additional Bible text is included with later preaching dates, suggesting that the same sermon was prompted by different texts. Generally, the preaching location is identified as Deptford, Kent for the earlier preachings, and no location is noted for the later ones, suggesting that they were also preached at Deptford. However, as noted in some of the sermon entries, sometimes multiple locations are mentioned within the preaching information for the same sermon, as well as some preachings with no location mentioned; in these cases, it is difficult to assign a place to the preachings, for none is explicitly noted.

Material Features

Paper, x + 722 pages, 8 1/2 x 6 5/8 inches. The sermons in the same neat early-eighteenth-century hand. Pages are ruled on all four sides in red. Spaces are left for sections that sometimes are not filled; Beaumont estimated how much space for each point, but sometimes he did not leave enough, and the writing got smaller.

Acquisition

According to a note by Rawlinson, "This ms. was wrote by Mr. Beaumont an Independent Teacher at Rotherhith surry, and purchased out of the Library of his successor Mr Abraham Taylor in the year 1740". The four volumes (MSS. Rawl. E. 109-112) were bought together as lot 363 in a sale.
