Contents Note

A notebook containing Thomas Aldersey's notes on sermons that he heard while at Oxford. Several of the sermons are dated in 1653 and 1654. The preachers whose sermons appear most often in the manuscripts are John Conant and both Oxford-based preachers named Henry Wilkinson (1610-1675 and 1616-1690). In the manuscript, the former is identified as Henry Wilkinson of Christ Church, the latter as Henry Wilkinson of Magdalen Hall. Also includes brief reflections on some Bible verses (ff. 30r-31r).

Material Features

158 leaves. Bound in ruled calf. The number 2 is written at the top of the inside cover. The writing begins by proceeding only the rectos, then continues upside-down on the versos from end of the volume.

Acquisition

This is one of twenty notebooks owned by Aldersey that were purchased by the Bodleian from Sotheby's, as lot 323, on 18 December 1986.
