(old series: GEMMS-MANUSCRIPT-627)
Title
Sermons and Two Hymns
Shelfmark
MS I.h.36
Creation Date
ca. 1657 - 1716
Contents Note

The volume contains sermons and two hymns dating from 1657 (although the manuscript reads 1557) through 1716. It is likely that most of the sermons date from the first part of the 18th century, but that is not certain. The only dated sermons are 1657, 1709, 1715, and possibly 1716.

Material Features

Size of paper about 14cm. x 9 cm. Vellum, with blind tooling, and, overing the fore-edge, a flap, to which is attached a clasp; inside the flap, marbled paper. Wilson presentation stamp. At the end of the text is the inscription "John Kirkpatrick his Book", but the present catalogue does not agree with the old catalogue that Kirkpatrick had written the main body of the manuscript. Inside the front cover is a partially erased inscription "Nathaneil Trotman his Book ..." The Congregational Library catalogue infers from his research that Kirkpatrick is a maternal relative of Trotman, but is not further identified. The entire manuscript is in a tiny but clear hand. In the last part of the manuscript the writing becomes even smaller, though still legible.
