Contents Note

This is a large folio containing biographical notices of the Northcote family and the two owners (first RIchard and then John Northcote), followed by transcripts of sermons preached by Francis Sourton (Soreton). Three sermons are dated 1648-1649 while the rest are dated 1672-1674. At the end of the volume is written: "The end of all the Sermons Mr. Sourton preached by vertue of the Kings Indulgence in the schoole house of Honiton. unless be A funerall Sermon which for being preached in the eveninge could not be taken. It was for honest Georg Abbot." Following this is an entry dated November 1674 which reads as follows: "The Cloudes that were gathred over us, now seeming to scatter, congregations every where began to take heart, & to come into there publique meeting places againe, where upon Mr. Hyeron preached in or schoolhouse, & att the importunity of some, Mr. Sourton also came over to us, but had the oportunity to preached only these 3 ensuing Sermon, by reason of an Order made by King & Counsell prohibiting the same, whereupon they desisted & Mr. Hieron continued preaching in his owne house, & Mr. Sourton remained in Powderham." On pp. 166-169 is a prayer before a sermon. This prayer is not attached to any particular sermon in this book. It is placed after a series of thirteen sermons and before a series of sixteen sermons.

Material Features

ff. vi and 423 pages. These are fair copies in a large, neat italic hand in dark ink throughout. All of the sermons are in the hand of the same scribe, most likely Richard Northcote.

The volume was donated by Miss Leigh Browne, 1929.
