Title
Thomas Whitaker, Sermons sent to his congregation from prison in York Castle
Creation Date
ca. 1684 - 1708
Contents Note

2 volumes of sermons by Thomas Whitaker (possibly the one who lived in Leeds), most of which were sent to his congregation while he was imprisoned in York Castle. The first volume also includes some with two letters signed T. W. (Thomas Whitaker) and dated, respectively, 9 and 16 August 1684 (pp. 1-5, 5-17). The first is addressed "To my Christian Bretheren, & friends in & about ye town of Leeds" and signed at York Castle.

Material Features

Large folio volumes with faded and worn binding. The sermons are written in a large late-17th-century hand. Wide left margins and narrow top margins.

Provenance

Cost £3 d6. Both volumes were owned by Joseph Conder in 1755.

Source of Data

Jeanne Shami, Helen Weller

Other Note

The sermons are dated, but since Whitaker was in prison, the dates must either refer to when the sermons were written or when he intended them to be preached in his absence.
