Contents Note

A title page reading "Heads and Notes of Certain Sermons and Discourses, from Diverse Texts of Scripture; by Mr. Thomas Hog, Minister of the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, at Kiltearn in the Shire of Ross. Transcribed from the Original Coppy of the Author, which was lent me for that purpose by Mrs Maive Relict of the deceas'd Mr George Maive Minister of Cullross" precedes an index, as well as a listing of the dated sermons, which has been tipped into the volume and is written in a different hand. At the end of the volume is a brief biography of Thomas Hog, possibly by the same hand that has made marginal notations and corrections throughout the volume. Dated sermons span the years 1659-1673.

Material Features

Quarto volume containing fair copies of Hog's sermons and sermon notes apparently copied from Hog's manuscripts. The front flyleaf verso contains the inscription "James Erskine's Book" and a bookplate bearing the crest of Hog of Newliston. A letter dated 4 January 1887 written by Robert Cumming McDougall to A. Hog of Newliston has been tipped in after the front flyleaf. McDougall indicates that he saw the manuscript at the manse of Kiltearn several years earlier and asks whether there has been any attempt to publish these sermons. Not foliated. Original pagination.
