The Carlton Shorthand Collection, among the most extensive extant shorthand collections, contains about 18,000 books, periodicals, and pamphlets related to stenography. Much of the collection was put together by William J. Carlton (1886-1973), a scholar of Charles Dickens's shorthand. The collection was primarily bequeathed by Carlton, with some later donations from the shorthand teacher, Peter Dorey.
