Contents Note

A record of preachers "appointed to Preach before the King the insuing Lent". Their details are given in terms of their post rather than their name, divided into those who preached in February and those who preached in March. This is followed by a list of the texts which were preached on some of these days, with the preacher's name given.

Material Features

Written into the first few pages of an interleaved almanac, which contains other manuscript annotations. The almanac is interleaved with double folios between each printed page and several blank pages before and after the almanac itself. It is bound in brown leather with metal clasps and embossed with the date of the almanac in gold. There is marbling to the fore-edge.

Provenance

Part of the Boswell Collection, which spans 1428-1935, with the bulk of the material from the 18th century. These papers come from Series XV, the papers of James Boswell (1672-1749) who married Lady Betty Bruce. There is a series of three boxes dedicated to Lady Betty Bruce's papers.

Acquisition

The foundation of the collection was the 1949 purchase of Lt. Col. Ralph Hayward Isham's Boswell collection, which was itself a combination of Isham's original Malahide Castle purchase and the papers found at Fettercairn. Later additions to the Yale collection include major acquisitions from the sixth Lady Talbot and the seventh Lord Talbot de Malahide, known as "Abbeylea," "McHarg," and "Talbot"; three lots of estate papers acquired from John Douglas Boswell, "Auchinleck I, II, III", and purchases of letters and papers of Robert Boswell, W.S.
