Other Note

Note on the front cover of the largest booklet suggests that they were "Probably by Rev John Mellen of Cambridge, Uncle of Caroline Duncan". However, notes alongside the sermons state that "Rev. John Mellen (Harv. 1770)... mentioned as probably preacher... appears in the Prentice Family, pp. 177-79, as the 2nd of 6 children of Rev. Joh Mellen (Harv. 1741), older brother of Mary.... Neither Rev. John Mellen (Harv. 1741 or 1770), grandfather or uncle, lived early enough to have written these sermons. From very strong resemblance in handwriting, paper and general style of these sermons... to sermons of Gov. Saltonstall already belonging to Yale, the assumption seems fair that these were also written by him".
