Shelfmark
CB.105
Creation Date
ca. 1670 - 1675
Contents Note

An autograph manuscript notebook of Good Friday sermons (with the exception of the first, delivered on Christmas Day, and the second) preached by John Dolben on between 1670 and 1675.

Material Features

Octavo. Calf. Gold-tooled binding. The pages have gold gilt edges. The gold lettering on the spine reads as follows: 'A. B. Dolbin's M. S. Sermons'.

Provenance

The inside front cover features two bookplates: 'Ecclesiae S: Petri Westmon: Bibliotheca' and 'Ex Libris John Frederick Gerrard' [twentieth century]. There is also a Jacobean armorial bookplate on the verso of the first flyleaf, belonging to Sir John Dolben (1684-1756), second baronet of Finedon, Northamptonshire.

Acquisition

A cutting from an unidentified bookseller's catalogue, presumably the source of John Frederick Gerrard's acquisition of this volume, identifies it as item 187, for sale at £6 10s. A letter from Gerrard to the Dean of Westminster, dated from Wigan, 25 February 1961, can be found inside a volume of three printed sermons by Dolben in the Westminster Abbey Library collection (Westminster Abbey Library, CB. 106), requesting that the Dean accept this and the three printed sermons for the Deanery Library.
