Contents Note

Box of miscellaneous papers and artefacts, including seal fragments, copy speeches in the House of Lords, such as 'Obiections against the name and stile of Ingand and Scottland into the name and stile of great Brittayne' (1603), a copy of the King's speech regarding tonnage and poundage (1628), a copy of a speech by a 'Ric Martyn' to King James (1603), 'A Irish Songe' (seventeenth century), 'A spetiall medicine for the plague of a sicke soule' (1595), a leaf from a printed octavo (late sixteenth century), a bundle of draft or copy sermons (late sixteenth century), 'The wordes which Mr Snape spake in the courte, when he was inhibited to preach on frydaye the xxth of Maye as neere as they can be gathered. 1603', and a fourteenth-century roll listing deaneries in Devon and Cornwall. 'Mr Snape' is most likely to be Edmund Snape (c. 1565-1608). 'The wordes which Mr Snape spake' has not been catalogued on this database as there is no particular mention of any specific sermon or sermons preached. Finally, there is also part of a catechism, written in secretary hand, entitled 'What is God?'

Material Features

The bundle of sermon drafts is unbound. There is a Ramist diagram (one loose leaf) amongst the drafts and fragments, outlining 'The workes of god'. Different hands have contributed to the drafts, and some of the fragments are in poor condition.

Provenance

'C 103' is part of the 'Chancery Masters' Exhibits'. The documents were handed on by each Chancery Master to his successor, until reclaimed. The exhibits in C 103 ended up in the care of Master Blunt, the last First Master, 1849-1856.
