Provenance

This manuscript belongs to the Domestic and Personal Papers of John Egerton, Second Earl of Bridgewater. The bookplate of the 'Bridgewater Library' has been pasted onto the inside front cover of the volume. The first sermon within this manuscript may have been owned by Frances Egerton (née Stanley), Countess of Bridgewater (1583-1636). See Heidi Brayman Hackel, Reading Material in Early Modern England: Print, Gender, and Literacy (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 2005), p. 279.

The Bridgewater House Library was purchased by Henry E. Huntington from John Francis Granville Scrope Egerton, Fourth Earl of Ellesmere, in 1917.

Other Note

See Guide to British Historical Manuscripts in the Huntington Library (San Marino, CA: The Huntington Library, 1982), pp. 21-25 for more information about the Ellesmere Collection. This particular manuscript is explored briefly in Joshua Eckhardt, Religion Around Donne (University Park, PA: The Pennsylvania State University Press, 2019). Although the Egerton Family Papers online finding aid categorises Item 9 within this volume as a series of sermons, the present cataloguer has not noted them here as they appear to be closer in genre to the meditation.
