Creation Date
ca. 1630 - 1640
Contents Note

Presentation copies of thirteen sermons. Dedicated "to my welbeloved godson Josias Haydocke son of Mr. William Haydocke of Preston". It opens with a lettere to "my deare youth", offering spiritual guidance and recalling Hudson christening Haydocke. This volume has had a later owner, J Baker, who inscribed the the flyleaf: "Given me by My Father... 1742 1744". Baker (or another owner) has made changes throughout the manuscript, changing the text that refers specifically to the reader as "godson", so in the intial letter "godson" has been changed to "friend" and "God father" to "friend in the Lord". There are a number of letters prefixing sermons: prior to sermon 7 [The triumph of Gods Grace over Mans Sin] there is a copy of a letter to Lord Strange, which would have been sent with a copy of the sermon, describing Christopher Hudson's thankfulness and dated Preston 1636. Before sermon 13 [The excellency of the birthright]] there is another letter, which appears to be addressed out to "Sundry Gentlewoman". However, this has been crossed out and is difficult to read. This letter is dated 12 January 1639 and seems to offer guidance on a political point.

Material Features

This manuscript has a number of typographic design features, including running headers for each sermon giving the title and verse, and biblical references given in the margins. The title page is embellished with quotes from Bernard. Sermons 4 and 5 have a separate title-page which states "Two sermons Preached In Lancaster At the Assises... Before the Judges… Mr Townley of Roile being high Sheriffe of Lancashire at that time. Roger Kenion undersheriff”. The volume is closed with an index of sermons within the volume.
