Sermon referenced is printed in the following edition: Thomas Gooch, "A sermon preach'd before the Honourable House of Commons : at St. Margaret's Westminster, on Wednesday the 30th of January, 1711. Being the anniversary fast. For the martyrdom of King Charles the First. By Thomas Gooch, D.D.," London: Printed by J.R. for Jonah Bowyer, 1712.
Contained within a short report on the "Political State for Jan 1711/12", concerned primarily with the actions of the House of Commons. Notes that Dr. Thomas Gooch, fellow of Gonville and Gaius College, "who preached before the [House of] Commons on the 30th, on Psalm 11 v: 3, received the thanks of the House. Nor was that acknowledgement unmerited at the hands of the persons in power, were it but for the following passage: Since we have seen and known sufficiently the miseries of rebellion, its time (one would think) to discover and discard those doctrines, to discourage and dismiss those persons, that would lead us to it..." Quote continues to the verso, mid-page. Report concludes by referencing other initiatives of the House of Commons that took place during the same year: "This very House of Commons this very year sent Walpole to the tower, voted Townshend an enemy to his Queen & Country; & in their Report fixed on the D. of Marlborough the imputations of being a cheat & a Robber" (f.216v).
