Title
Heywood Sermons
Shelfmark
MS Osborn b370
Creation Date
1671 - 1694
Contents Note

Auditor's notes on 46 sermons, predominantly by Oliver Heywood. There are some inserted pages, including a folded insert of notes on historical events and a poem "I shall give you one note of gods antiary love to England". The sermons are followed by a computation of the years that Samuel Holdsworth wrote the book, from 1671to 1675, and his ages for each of these years (28 to 32). This is followed by notes in a different, italic hand, of the Holdsworth family births and deaths until 1889 (4 ff.)

Material Features

12 x 8 cm. Volume has been disassembled, with every element (cover, individual gathers with sermons) placed in separate archival wallets. A volume with a brown leather cover with tooling and clasps. There are some preserved flowers and corn in the first few pages, perhaps of interest because there are several sermons on the harvest. Signed "Anne Houldsworth, Anne Skelton B. new bound May 5 1716". These two Anne's may be the same person.

Provenance

Likely stayed within the Houldsworth family for several generations.
