Shelfmark
GB 247 MS Gen 340
Creation Date
ca. 1640 - 1664
Contents Note

A collection of 27 sermons on various subjects by William Guthrie, Andrew Gray and 'Mr Bruce.' The majority of the sermons attributed to Guthrie appear to be in his own hand, with a couple of exceptions, and the sermons by Gary and Bruce are in distinct hands. The final two sermons are not attributed to a preacher in the contents page and the author is unclear. The University of Glasgow catalogue dates the MS to 1662-1664 based on the given preaching dates but the inclusion of work by Gray suggests that some of the MS may be earlier in date.

Material Features

Leather bound MSS with notable damage to cover, the sermons appear to have been compiled but do not belong to one original text. The paper is frayed throughout and there is some bad staining but overall the writing remains legible. Some sermons are in worse condition than others. The back pages are a print of Wodrow's 'History of the Sufferings of the Church of Scotland.' There are no page or folio numbers, c.195 leaves in total.

Acquisition

Part of a collection of papers of Robert Wodrow held by the University of Glasgow. The manuscript was acquired from Charles W Wodrow Thomson on 8th July 1891.

Source of Data

Nicole Cumming; University of Glasgow Archives and Special Collections Catalogue

Other Note

The MS may have been collected and compiled by Robert Wodrow. MS Gen 341-342 (held in the same collection) have the same binding and also appear to have been compiled at a later date than the original MSS contained within.
