Contents Note

MS contains 30 sermons by James Ferguson preached at Kilwinning (his parish) and Dalry, both in Ayrshire, between 1653 and 1660. The sermons were preached for a diverse number of occasions, including to the Synod and Presbytery, at Communion, or on the Sabbath. The first two pages contain various notes and the signatures of both James Ferguson and Mary Ferguson, his daughter. There are also two loose letters in the volume, one from James Wodrow to Robert Wodrow. The third page contains a contents page that matches the internal contents.

Material Features

Leather bound notebook with notable damage - there are loose pages, tearing and holes throughout. The paper is detached from the spine of the binding. The hand is small and challenging to read in places, particularly where the ink has faded and/or paper is stained. There are no page or folio numbers, the MS is c.82 leaves.

Provenance

The front pages of the MS contain the following note, after the contents - 'this volume of sermons by the Rvd Mr James Ferguson min[iste]r off Kilwinning At More Solemn occasions was gifted by Mr Joseph Cave to [signature] Edin[bu]r[gh] May 8 1729.'

Acquisition

Part of a collection of papers of Robert Wodrow held by the University of Glasgow. The manuscript was acquired from Charles W Wodrow Thomson on 8th July 1891.
